Developing A Way To Determine If Patient Wakes Up During Surgery

An estimated 30,000 Americans a year wake up during surgery and experience intense fear and pain.  People who have woken up while anesthetized are often unable to communicate that they are awake and conscious.  A group of scientists from MIT has found a way to monitor a patient’s brain activity to determine when they wake up.  Currently, the procedure requires patients to shave their heads in order to accommodate the electrode cap.  To see more, read Raw Story.
